Piercing Aftercare
GENERAL PIERCING AFTERCARE
- WASH YOUR HANDS thoroughly prior to cleaning or touching your piercing for any reason.
ONLY touch your piercing when cleaning (1-3x daily) using a sterile saline wound wash. We recommend NeilMed solution
DO NOT USE ointments, alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, any antibacterial or fragranced soaps, iodine, triclosan, or other harsh ingredients (a sterile saline wound wash is the best option for cleaning piercings.)
Apply solution to the piercing, let it soak into the skin for 15-20 seconds and any discharge/secretions you may have around the area as the moisture from the solution will soften the dried sections.
Apply solution to a small, clean paper towel. Take a q-tip - DO NOT use the q-tip itself on your piercing to avoid the cotton pieces getting stuck on your jewelry - wrap the tip of the q-tip with the paper towel and then clean your piercing using the wrapped q-tip.
DO NOT have wet hair laying over your piercings. ALWAYS dry any hair near your piercings or have your hair tied up away from your piercings entirely. Wet hair laying over healing piercings will cause excess moisture build up and in turn cause you issues/irritation.
Dry the piercing site/area around the piercing after cleaning. Leaving excess moisture can cause bacteria build up around the piercing site
You do not need to move or rotate your piercing, the only movement necessary is your daily cleaning routine to get rid of the dried healing secretions.
Avoid over cleaning, no more than 1-3x daily (over cleaning can dry out the piercing site)
Avoid all unnecessary contact with the piercing, such as playing with jewelry, friction from clothing and sleeping directly on the area.
DO NOT TOUCH it if you do not need to.
Avoid beauty and personal care products at the site of the piercing. Makeup and makeup remover is a particularly harsh irritant for new piercings
Avoid bodies of water, such as lakes, pools and hot tubs for at least two weeks; make sure to clean after swimming while healing any piercing. Use a waterproof bandage if needed.
There are general healing times for each piercing, and personal health, hygiene and lifestyle will all play a part in your healing process.. You can always come back to have us check on your healing progress, to see if you are ready for a change, or if you need help changing your jewelry.
** Downsizing jewelry is a necessary part of having your piercing heal correctly, make sure you contact your piercer when you are ready for a downsize in jewelry or if you are not sure, always contact us to ask!
THE FOLLOWING ARE NORMAL:
For initial piercings: some bleeding, localized swelling, tenderness and/or bruising
During healing: some discoloration, secretion/discharge of a whiteish/off white fluid that will harden around the surface of your piercing site and on your jewelry to form a film and/or a “crust” that will need to be removed during your daily cleaning.
Continue cleaning and following the instructions of your piercer for the duration of the healing.
**Follow all advice and instructions from your piercer. Do not hesitate to ask any questions!
