Dos & Don’ts After Getting Pierced: How To Ensure Healing And Prevent Infections

Now that you have your piercing it’s time to make sure you know the most important Dos and Don’ts to optimal healing and preventing any possibility of infection. Some of the most common piercings (ears, nose, and naval/belly buttons) are also the most common to get infected. Get all the information you need about piercing aftercare with this guide and find out exactly what needs to be done to get through the healing process properly and how long it will all take.

What To DO:

Keep It Clean

  • Gently clean your piercing with a saline solution or a piercing-friendly cleanser instead of alcohol or hydrogen peroxide.

Clean it twice a day, once in the morning and once before bed.

Wash Your Hands!

  • Wash your hands thoroughly before touching your piercing. This helps keep germs at bay and prevents potential infections.

Follow the Piercer’s Advice

  • Stick to your aftercare routine our piercers provided. If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to ask us.

Sleep Comfortably

  • Make sure you sleep on the side that’s opposite of your new piercing if you can. If that becomes tricky, use a clean pillowcase/ bed sheets to avoid any irritation.

What NOT to Do:

Skip Harsh Products

  • Do Not use alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, or antibiotic ointments on your piercing. They can interrupt the healing process by drying out the piercing and preventing new healthy cells from growing.

Leave the Jewelry Alone

  • Do Not change your jewelry too soon. Healing times vary, so wait until your piercer gives the green light to do so.

Don’t Twist/ play with the Jewelry

  • Resist the urge to twist or turn your jewelry a lot. This can cause discomfort and complications, especially for new oral piercings

Stay Out of Pools and Hot Tubs

  • Keep away from swimming until your piercing is fully healed to prevent exposure to bacteria lingering in the water.

No Tight Clothing over jewelry

  • NO tight clothing or accessories that might rub against your piercing and cause irritation. Too much friction against a new piercing will certainly cause issues for you.

Don’t Rush the process

  • Healing takes time. Follow your piercer’s advice and Don’t Rush the healing process.
